The distinction matters because “upgrade to moving coil” leaves most of the practical decision unanswered. It does not name the input needed, confirm arm compatibility or explain what happens when the stylus requires service. This guide compares documented examples, not listening-test winners. What do MM, MC and moving iron actually mean?

A cartridge converts the stylus's movement into an electrical signal. The stylus is the tip contacting the groove; the cantilever is the small support carrying that movement into the cartridge mechanism.

In a moving-magnet, or MM, design, a magnet moves with the cantilever while the coils remain fixed. Ortofon's MM explanation describes that arrangement. In a moving-coil, or MC, design, the coils move in a fixed magnetic field, as shown in its MC explanation.

Moving iron is another magnetic design, not a mounting standard. Grado describes Green4 as a high-output moving-iron cartridge with fixed coils. Its existence is a useful reminder that an MM-versus-MC comparison is not a complete catalogue of cartridge technology.

These terms identify mechanisms. They do not, by themselves, prove that one product retrieves more information, suits a particular arm or sounds preferable. Separate a manufacturer's construction description from its promotional listening claims.

How do the practical categories compare?

The categories cross rather than replace one another. Audio-Technica's AT85EP is a P-mount dual-magnet model, while its AT-OC9XEN is a half-inch moving-coil model. “Elliptical” appears in both descriptions. You therefore cannot identify a cartridge's electrical requirements from the shape of its stylus tip.

Write one field for generator, another for mount, and another for stylus. This simple separation makes an incomplete retailer listing easier to question.

Why should the mount be checked first?

A half-inch mounting specification refers to two fixing points spaced half an inch apart. Ortofon's cartridge-selection guide distinguishes mounting arrangements and directs readers to the turntable's documentation before purchase. It does not establish that every cartridge with that spacing fits every compatible-looking arm.

For a concrete contrast, the Audio-Technica AT85EP specification identifies P-mount attachment and the ATN85EP replacement stylus. Do not treat it as a half-inch cartridge because another model from the same manufacturer uses that mount.

Also distinguish a cartridge from a cartridge supplied on a headshell, the carrier at the end of some tonearms. A premounted package still needs the appropriate arm connection and setup. The seller having attached the cartridge does not confirm its alignment or total mass for your arm.

Our editorial rule is to copy the complete model designation, including variant, into your notes. A listing photograph and a shortened family name are insufficient purchase evidence. Ask the equipment maker or a qualified dealer to resolve a missing mount specification rather than planning an improvised adapter.

What do output voltage and loading tell you?

Output voltage describes the cartridge's electrical signal under specified test conditions. A millivolt, written mV, is one thousandth of a volt. The test conditions belong with the number: they are not instructions for measuring a live cartridge at home.

A phono stage is the cartridge-input amplification stage, whether separate or built into other equipment. Loading describes the electrical conditions presented to the cartridge by the connected phono stage and signal path. Resistance is expressed in ohms; capacitance may be expressed in picofarads, or pF. Gain describes amplification. These are separate fields, not interchangeable ways of saying “power.”

Consider two current manufacturer specification pages:

The shared mount clearly does not imply shared electrical requirements. Nor is either output figure a sound-quality score. Read the phono-stage manual for supported cartridge inputs, available gain and loading, and the intended connection path. Do not assume that a switch labelled MC provides every setting every moving-coil model needs.

This guide does not prescribe a phono-stage setting. If the manuals do not establish the combination, ask the manufacturers or a qualified technician. Do not open an amplifier or modify internal circuitry to create a missing input.

Are all moving-coil cartridges low-output?

No. Sumiko lists the Blue Point No. 3 High as a high-output moving-coil cartridge: 2.5 mV at 1 kHz, with a 47 kΩ load specification. The manufacturer positions that variant for MM phono stages.

That is a documented counterexample to “MC always needs the MC input,” not a reason to ignore the receiving equipment's manual. Keep the word High in the model name. Do not transfer its specifications to a similarly named low-output variant.

The Sumiko page's output entry does not state the groove velocity shown in the preceding comparison table. We therefore do not calculate a cross-brand output ratio from those entries. Matching units is necessary for a comparison, but matching test conditions matters too.

What must the tonearm accommodate?

Mechanical compatibility includes more than screw spacing. Ortofon's tonearm/cartridge FAQ treats tonearm-system mass and cartridge compliance together. Compliance describes the flexibility of the cartridge's suspension system. The arm and cartridge interact mechanically; a cartridge's own weight alone cannot establish a suitable combination.

For your equipment record, ask the maker or dealer to confirm:

Do not add mass merely because a generic chart suggests a different category. Likewise, do not transfer a tracking-force number from an old cartridge to a replacement. These are setup requirements for the installed combination, not preferences to settle by trial and error.

Where documentation is missing, mark the pairing unresolved. A recommendation based on the exact arm and cartridge is more useful than a claim that all lightweight or all expensive cartridges will suit it.

Can you replace only the stylus?

Check the exact product, not just the generator label. Ortofon identifies Stylus 2M Red as a replacement for 2M Red. Audio-Technica says the AT-OC9XEN stylus assembly is not field-replaceable and identifies a fee-based exchange service instead.

The important ownership question is therefore: “What is the documented service route for this specific cartridge?” A replacement stylus, dealer exchange and specialist repair are different arrangements. Confirm regional eligibility, current terms and what must be returned before budgeting for one.

A stylus-service plan is not permission to remove the assembly yourself. Follow the exact manufacturer instructions or have a qualified technician perform the work. Ortofon's equipment-care guidance warns against finger contact with the stylus and recommends its guard during cartridge mounting or removal. Do not straighten a bent cantilever or use a record to test visibly damaged parts.

For powered equipment, follow each manual's shutdown and power-disconnection requirements before any permitted handling. Electrical faults, damaged cables and internal work belong with qualified service personnel. Keep the cartridge comparison separate from repair.

What does a useful compatibility card look like?

The following is an original, fictional paperwork exercise, not a tested equipment pairing.

A listener owns an unidentified half-inch tonearm and an MM-only phono stage. They are considering a standard 2M Red and an AT-OC9XEN. Only the attachment description and phono-stage category have been recorded so far.

Neither candidate receives a complete compatibility approval from this card. The MM model is not automatically approved simply because the existing stage says MM. The MC candidate also requires a different or otherwise documented compatible amplification arrangement before it could be considered.

The next useful action is obtaining the missing documentation, not buying both for an informal trial. Add columns for source URL or manual page, date checked and who confirmed an unresolved point. Keep “confirmed,” “not supported” and “unknown” as separate outcomes. An empty field should not silently become a yes.

When is listening preference relevant?

Preference becomes meaningful after the system is compatible, correctly set up and in serviceable condition. Ask what you actually want to change: access to a documented replacement stylus, a serviceable alternative to a damaged cartridge, or a particular listening preference. It is a small set of fully documented combinations, with the service route understood and the remaining uncertainty written down. That approach belongs alongside format-specific record care, especially when fragile or historically important media require a qualified conservator.
